A while ago I was asked to moderate a conversation about “Stress”. It was very enlightening, so I decided to write a synopsis of the conversation.

How would you define stress?

  • Anxiety
  • Worry
  • A feeling within you
  • Tightness
  • Stress is both physical and emotional

What effect do you think stress has on life?

  • Constricts our blood flow
  • Slows nutrient absorption
  • Causes cortisol, the stress hormone, to be released which causes damage to muscles over time.
  • Causes diseases like diabetes and especially cancer
  • Causes aging
  • Prevents weight loss
  • Causes hair to fall out
  • Causes irritability
  • Prevents us from moving forward in other areas of our lives

What does the bible say about stress?

Mathew 6:25-34

25 “Therefore I tell you, do not worry about your life, what you will eat or drink; or about your body, what you will wear. Is not life more than food, and the body more than clothes? 26 Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they? 27 Can any one of you by worrying add a single hour to your life?

28 “And why do you worry about clothes? See how the flowers of the field grow. They do not labor or spin. 29 Yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was dressed like one of these. 30 If that is how God clothes the grass of the field, which is here today and tomorrow is thrown into the fire, will he not much more clothe you—you of little faith? 31 So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ 32 For the pagans run after all these things, and your heavenly Father knows that you need them.

33 But seek first his kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. 34 Therefore do not worry about tomorrow, for tomorrow will worry about itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

What is the wisdom in that?

  • Worry is a waste of time.
  • We accomplish nothing through worrying, but rather lose a lot

What is the bible’s remedy for worrying?

Philippians 4:6-7

6 Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. 7 Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ

1 Peter 5:7

Give all your worries and cares to God, for he cares about you.

Proverbs 12:25

Worry weighs a person down; an encouraging word cheers a person up.

In short?

  • Do not worry
  • Pray
  • Vent
  • Say what you want, declare your needs
  • Gratitude. Be thankful
  • Take deep breaths
  • Socialize
  • Listen to encouraging words.

In long?

  • We live in a stressful world, you want to relieve stress as regularly as possible
  • Whenever you feel stressed, try to deal with it and get rid of it. You don’t want it lingering or stored in your body.
  • The best way to start getting rid of the stress is to take deep breaths in the moment. It may not relief all the tension, but it’s a start.
  • In general, fill your life with stress relieving activities

How do we deal with stress?

  • Deep / Diaphragmatic breathing
  • Self-care (spa, vacations…)
  • Exercise
  • Journaling
  • Prayer & Meditation
  • Yoga
  • Do things you love (Hobbies)
  • Avoid negative thinking
  • Let go of things you cannot change & Focus on things you can
  • Take full responsibility for everything that happens in your life
  • Vent, talk to friends
  • Socialize

Can we help others manage/deal with their stress?

Important point:

Sometimes people may want to offload their stresses on you by exploding at you. You can say go offload somewhere else, or you can take that as an opportunity to say, “What is really the matter, what is bothering you?” and let them vent and unload in a healthier way.
